On October 16, we celebrate World Food Day. Under this year’s theme, "Right to foods for a better life and a better future", the United Nations calls for action to ensure that everyone has access to a diverse, nutritious, and sustainable diet. The IGZ is making a significant contribution to global food security through its research on sustainable and resilient agrifood systems.

The 2024 World Food Day emphasizes the right to food. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) highlights the global challenge of ensuring that all people have access to safe, nutritious, and diverse diets through its theme, "Right to foods for a better life and a better future". This year's focus is on sustainable food production and the fight against hunger and malnutrition, both of which are exacerbated by climate change, economic instability, and conflict. In response to these challenges, the FAO is calling for increased action from governments, organizations, and civil society.

The Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) actively contributes to addressing these global challenges. Through its research on innovative horticultural production methods and soil health improvement, IGZ develops sustainable solutions to boost the production of nutritious plants. A key focus of the institute’s work is the research on plant adaptation to changing climate conditions and efficiently utilizing resources such as water and nutrients, while reducing pesticide use to protect biodiversity. These efforts enhance the resilience of agricultural systems and contribute to securing global food supplies.

Our projects not only promote the availability of fresh, healthy vegetables but also contribute to the creation of an equitable food system focused on sustainability and universal access. Together, we are laying the foundation for a future where the right to food becomes a reality for everyone worldwide.
