The "Potsdam Science Day" will take place for the 11th time on 4 May 2024. On this Saturday, universities, schools and research institutions from Brandenburg will present their day-to-day work beyond the walls of the institutes at the Telegrafenberg.

The Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) will once again participate. We will show selected highlights of our diverse research into sustainable agricultural and food systems. This year, the work of the "Plant-Biotic Interactions" research group takes centre stage:

It's all about communication? Sustainable agriculture with plant-insect interactions

How do you identify a scent? And why does modelling clay help a plant to avoid being eaten? We will  answer these and more questions at the Potsdam Day of Science. At our stand, we will provide information about our research into the relationship between plants and insects (biotic interactions) and how this knowledge can be used to reduce the use of pesticides in agriculture.

Look over the shoulder of science, test your nose and craft an experiment to take home in House H, lecture room 3.

Away with the nasty fly - how we save cabbage from predators (Talk in German!)

Vegetables don't just taste good to us humans. Many insects also feed on plants, such as the cabbage fly. It attacks cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables, jeopardising the harvest.

Prof Dr Nicole van Dam, Scientific Director of the IGZ, will explain how we can make use of the knowledge about the communication between plants and insects to protect cabbage from the "nasty" fly and the environment in her lecture in House C4 from 14:00-14:40

We look forward to seeing you!
