Organic Horticultural Systems

The aim of the Junior Research Group “Organic Horticultural Systems” (HORTSYS.JR) is a systemic investigation of innovative, climate-adapted, and resilient cultivation systems for organic vegetable production in the field. The research focuses on the selection of suitable plant species and varieties, plant protection systems, fertilization management, weed control, and water management based on field trials.

The demand for organically produced vegetables has continuously increased in recent years. At the same time, climate change and its consequences pose increasing challenges for the production of high-quality vegetables. These include longer and more frequent drought periods that raise water demand, faster and stronger weed growth, and the spread of agricultural pests. To meet these challenges, the Junior Research Group HORTSYS.JR is taking innovative and international approaches, such as using robotics and sharing knowledge about varieties and cultivation systems with Mediterranean countries.

The results and data obtained contribute to the scientific discourse while also being directly applied in organic horticultural practice. A better understanding of cultivation systems aims to sustainably strengthen organic vegetable production in Germany.
