Vegetable Field Day in Rhineland-Palatinate: Boosting humus formation in vegetable cultivation with catch crops
Visitors were able to view various vegetable cultivation trials on site and discuss current developments in practical cultivation. Numerous companies also showed agricultural and horticultural products. Attendees were also able to experience the use of modern machinery in various vegetable crops first-hand.
The team behind the “HumusFuerGemuese” project, coordinated by the IGZ and part of the Humus Alliance, presented the results of sowing a wide variety of catch crops and catch crop mixtures. Particular emphasis was placed on the plants’ biomass production, both above and below ground. Luca Reisinger, the regional coordinator for the area, provided information on the results to date and their significance for the implementation of the model and demonstration project on humus build-up.
In glorious autumn weather, the varied field day offered a wide range of opportunities for professional development and technical exchange. The regional coordinators and Dr Sandra Münzel (IGZ), co-coordinator of “HumusFuerGemuese”, discussed the latest findings together, exchanged experiences and gathered ideas for the continued support of the participating farms in the coming years.
