On 26 September 2025, the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) hosted a special field day on its experimental fields. Around 30 guests took the opportunity to learn about the latest research on Brassica vegetables.

The focus was on biodiversity and health benefits of cabbage varieties, the plant-biotic interactions of cabbage plants with insects and microbes, new metabolic pathways in red cabbage and kohlrabi, as well as practice-oriented approaches to reducing emissions in vegetable production and building up soil humus. An insight into ongoing field trials on establishing artichokes in organic farming in Brandenburg was also included.

After an extensive tour of the experimental areas and fascinating insights into the research work, participants took the opportunity to exchange ideas over a lunch snack right in the fields.

The field day clearly demonstrated how closely basic research, applied projects, and socially relevant questions interact and interlock at the IGZ. From plant chemistry to sustainable cultivation systems to innovative strategies for healthy nutrition and climate protection – cabbage provided many starting points of connection for exciting discussions on this day.
