On 9 and 10 April, scientists met at the Leibniz Conference on Bioactive Compounds at the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) in Großbeeren. The conference traditionally promotes dialogue between disciplines and between science and industry.

The keynote speakers included Niels Agerbirk from the University of Copenhagen, who shed light on glucosinolate structures in evolution, Miroslav Strnad from Palacký University with a contribution on new cytokinin biostimulants for agriculture and horticulture, and Ibrahim Morgan from the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry in Halle (Saale). His team received this year's Leibniz Drug of the Year Award for their research into a new bioactive compound against aryl-hydrocarbon receptor (AHR)-expressing cancers.

Young scientists also had the opportunity to draw attention to themselves with presentations and posters. As part of a competition, Iryna Mykytiuk and Abeer Al-Samawi from the IGZ was honoured for their poster presentation on microalgae contamination in land-based cultivation of macroalgae. The prize for the best lecture went to Nabanita Hazra from the Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials (DWI) in Aachen, in which she presented her work on the application of bio-based microgels in plant protection.

The Leibniz Conference on Bioactive Compounds is organised annually by the Leibniz Research Network on Bioactive Compounds. The conference provides an opportunity for exchange and always puts the host Institute as a member of the Leibniz Association at centre stage.
