On March 4, 2025, the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) in Großbeeren welcomed 20 students from Berlin and Brandenburg as part of Germany’s nationwide Girls’ Day and Brandenburg’s Future Day. The aim was to offer practical insights into various professional fields related to plant research – from plant care and technical work to scientific research.

Under the motto “The future is yours!”, the IGZ introduced the students to everyday work at the interface of plants, people, and the environment. Three stations gave them an overview of different aspects of research:

Laboratory work: Technical assistants and doctoral researchers explained their career paths and daily tasks, and showed how they collaborate on complex experiments. The students practiced pipetting and tried out molecular biology methods for themselves.

Technical systems in research: In modern climate chambers and a gas exchange greenhouse, our measurement technicians demonstrated the use of control and monitoring systems in plant science experiments.

Plant care in the experimental facility: Gardeners talked about their diverse work in the research setting and guided the students in transplanting young plants – which they could take home for their own experiments.

IGZ regularly takes part in Girls’ Day and Future Day to inspire young people to explore careers in science and technology – and to show possible paths toward vocational training or academic study.

Training opportunities at IGZ
IGZ also offers vocational training: For the upcoming training year, two positions for horticulture apprenticeships in vegetable production are available.
