Jonathan Garcia, a second-year doctoral candidate within the “Economic Development and Food Security” research group at the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ), successfully applied for two competitive fellowships funded by United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU WIDER) and the Joachim Hertz Foundation. He will use this funding to further his thesis in stimulating research environments.

Being a trained development economist with experience in humanitarian work, Garcia joined Prof Dr Tilman Brück’s research group at IGZ in July 2023 for his doctoral studies. His research aims to improve food security interventions in fragile settings. Specifically, he studies how design features of humanitarian food assistance impact people's well-being and community dynamics.

Jonathan Garcia has now been awarded two competitive fellowships to further his PhD research.

UNU WIDER in Helsinki, Finland, selects each year excellent graduate students conducting research on developing economies for the Visiting PhD Fellowship. Jonathan has been successful in this highly competitive programme and will start his 3-months stay in Helsinki in April 2025.

He also received the “Add-on Fellowship for Interdisciplinary Economics and Interdisciplinary Business Administration” of the Joachim Hertz Foundation. The foundation supports applicants whose research questions are interdisciplinary and highly relevant to society, and who thus contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals with flexible financial support. Jonathan plans to use these funds to support his research and extend his scientific network with a research stay in the United States later this year.
