Vortrag: "With a help from my little friends“ –Perspectives and limitations for the use of biostimulantsin plant production"
The application of biostimulants based on microorganisms or natural bioactive compounds is discussed as a strategy to promote plant growth, nutrient utilization, stress resilience, yield stability, and quality of crop products, independent of direct nutritional effects or plant protection activities.
Despite the great diversity and often complex composition of the various biostimulant products, common modes of action have been characterized in the recent past, with beneficial effects frequently observed under controlled conditions. However, limited reproducibility of the expected effects, particularly under field conditions, remains a major challenge for practical applications. Obviously, various still poorly understood external factors play a central role in the manifestation of biostimulant effects under practical conditions. These aspects will be addressed, summarizing the results of case studies and meta-analyses based on experiments conducted under variable conditions.
